Stone and Brick Walls in Winchester, VAWalls built to hold, and to look right
A wall has to hold up, hold back, or hold the eye. Third Pig Masonry builds garden, retaining and feature walls in stone and brick, and repairs the ones that have started to fail.
What we build
Garden walls and borders, retaining walls along slopes and around patios, seat walls, and feature walls, in stone and in brick. Low garden walls and taller walls that carry real weight are different jobs, and each is built for what it has to do.
Signs it is time to call
- A wall that leans or bulges
- Cracks running through a wall
- Stones that have fallen or come loose
- Soil washing out from behind a wall
- A slope in the yard that keeps eroding
- A raised patio or bed that needs an edge
- Water pooling at the foot of a wall
- A new garden or feature wall
Why walls fail
Nearly every failed wall is a drainage failure. Water builds up behind the wall, the soil gets heavy, and the wall leans, cracks or falls. A proper base, a gravel backfill and a way for water to leave are what keep a wall straight.
Rebuilding an old wall
A wall that has started to lean can sometimes be fixed. Often it has to come down and go back up with the base and drainage it never had. Where the stone is sound, it goes back up. For entrance walls see stone entranceways and pillars.

Stone and Brick Walls questions
- Can a leaning wall be saved?
Sometimes, if it has not gone far and the cause can be fixed. Often it is rebuilt with a proper base and drainage.
- What goes behind a retaining wall?
Gravel and a way for water to leave, usually a drain. Soil packed tight against the back of a wall is what pushes it over.
- Do you build tall retaining walls?
Call and describe the wall. Height and what sits above it decide how it has to be built, and some walls need an engineer.
