Fireplaces in Winchester, VAMasonry fireplaces built in brick and stone
A masonry fireplace is a long build done in order: footing, firebox, flue and chimney. Third Pig Masonry builds fireplaces in brick and stone, indoors and out, and a recent one went up in Snowshoe, WV.
What we build
Indoor fireplaces and chimneys, outdoor fireplaces, and stone or brick faces on a fireplace that is already there. The firebox, the flue and the stack are built to work together.
Signs it is time to call
- A new fireplace in a new build
- A fireplace to add to an existing house
- An outdoor fireplace on the patio
- A fireplace face you want redone in stone
- A fireplace that is cracked or smoking
- A hearth that needs rebuilding
- A chimney that has to come with the fireplace
- A fireplace project you are not sure how to start
Built from the footing up
A fireplace is heavy, so the footing comes first. Then the firebox, the smoke path and the chimney go up in order, each part laid so the one above it sits right. A good looking face on a badly built firebox is not a fireplace worth having.
Brick or stone
Brick gives a classic look and suits most houses. Stone gives a heavier, more rugged one, and suits cabins and mountain homes. Many fireplaces mix the two, with a stone face and a brick firebox. The choice follows the house and what you want to see when you walk in. For the stack itself see chimney building and repair.

Fireplaces questions
- Can you add a fireplace to a house that does not have one?
Often yes. It needs a footing, a path for the chimney and the right clearances, which get worked out on a look at the house.
- Do you build outdoor fireplaces?
Yes, in brick and stone. Call and describe what you have in mind.
- Can you reface an old fireplace in stone?
Yes. The existing face is looked at first to see what it can carry.
