Masonry Questions, AnsweredStraight answers about chimneys, stone and brick
The questions homeowners ask most, answered the way we would answer them on the phone. Still stuck, call.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is my chimney leaking?
Usually a cracked crown, open mortar joints or failed flashing at the roof. Water gets in, freezes and breaks the masonry apart. See chimney building and repair.
- Do you build new chimneys?
Yes. New chimneys are built in brick and stone, usually with a new fireplace. See fireplaces.
- Can you add a fireplace to my house?
Often yes. It needs a footing, a path for the chimney and the right clearances. See fireplaces.
- Can you build stone pillars for my entrance?
Yes. Stone pillars, gate posts and entrance walls are part of the work. See stone entranceways and pillars.
- What goes under a brick or stone patio?
A compacted stone base and a bedding layer, with the patio pitched so water runs away from the house. See brick and stone patios.
- Why do retaining walls fall over?
Nearly always drainage. Water builds up behind the wall, the soil gets heavy and pushes the wall out. A proper base and drainage behind the wall prevent it. See stone and brick walls.
- Can you rebuild steps or a walk that has sunk?
- Which towns do you serve?
Out of Winchester, VA to Stephens City, Berryville, Front Royal, Middleburg and Leesburg in Virginia, and Martinsburg and Berkeley Springs in West Virginia. See the service area page.
- How do I get an estimate?
Call or send the form with the job and the town. A photo helps.
